Blue Elbow Swamp Trip
Orange Texas, Sabine River

June 6, 2004

The rain held off on Saturday morning to provide some excellent paddling. We paddled up to Square Lake and fished along the way. It was a great day for those who want lots of fishing action. Bass and bluegill were all along the banks.

We only traveled a couple miles Saturday, but his area provides a great deal more opportunity for exploration. There are several areas of the marsh that are perfect for kayaks that can move over the heavy beds of weeds.

Travel East on Interstate Highway 10. Take the next Orange exit after 16th street...Texas 90. Go south for about .5 mile and watch for Blue Bird Fish Camp on the left...look for the "Commercial-For Sale" sign. The topo maps of the area are not complete so I have included an aerial photo to the left. The camp is closed, but the boat ramp is open with no charge. If you cross the Sabine River, you have gone too far. Turn around and come back to the next exit west of the river.

Wide channels run through much of the swamp close to the boat ramp.
